This Victorian Gothic romance novel pushes all the right buttons: brooding doctor, creepy setting, mysterious secrets, multiple suspects, romantic push and pull and cornered heroine.

It has been hard to find a Gothic romance in the tradition of Victoria Holt, but with a more sensual edge. This book by Eve Silver fit solidly into that category.

Darcie is the down-on-her-luck woman sent by her sister to serve in the household of the enigmatic Dr.

He does mysterious, bloody things in t This Victorian Gothic romance novel pushes all the right buttons: brooding doctor, creepy setting, mysterious secrets, multiple suspects, romantic push and pull and cornered heroine.

Soon, Darcie finds herself closely involved in the doctor's work, but only told as much as necessary to complete her tasks.

Is Dr. Cole hiding information or just being fastidiously discreet? The dreary London location comes through clearly in the book, as does the danger.

Women are being horrifically murdered, and Dr. Cole seems some how connected. The relationship between Damien and Darcie is charged with attraction, but fairly abruptly tips into more.

Darcie moved very quickly from skittish mouse to secure siren, and it struck me as a little unrealistic.

Sure, she had grown into a more confident woman, but sadly I didn't think she had become a stupid one at the same time.

I had hoped Ms. Silver would not stoop to such a common plot device, but I was disappointed. Regardless, the end was exciting and climactic and had a thorough and pleasing epilogue.

If you are looking for an overtly sensual romance paired with a moody, suspenseful Victorian historical featuring touches of horror made popular at the time by Mary Shelley, then I recommend you pick up this first book in the Dark Gothic series by Eve Silver.

Whitney - but after I was introduced to historical romance, I grew away from gothic. Recently, gothic seems to be making a comeback, both through rereleases of old ones and new authors to the subgenre.

I confess I bought Dark Desires mainly because of the gorgeous, moody cover. But in this case, the contents lived up to the cover. Darcie Finch was the stepdaughter of a wealthy merchant but has lately I discovered gothic romance in high school - authors like Mary Stewart, Victoria Holt, Phyllis A.

Darcie Finch was the stepdaughter of a wealthy merchant but has lately fallen on hard times. She finally goes to her sister for help, the sister who is a madam in the Whitechapel district.

Abigail sends her away, telling her to go to Dr. He assigns her to be his assistant, for he is an anatomist and needs a skilled artist to draw and label body parts during his dissections.

I really enjoyed the story and the atmosphere was very well done. Just enough mystery and horror to be thrilling but not overly frightening, and a happy ending!

Entertaining, but I'm not sure I'd go right to good. Rounded up for entertainment value. I'm a sucker for a Gothic novel sometimes, so I got a set of these for my own amusement.

Parts of this aren't bad, but parts of this don't really work. I've read two now, and while entertaining, they seem to follow a fairly set formula: Woman in generally financial trouble is forced out of desperation to work in the house of a semi-shady dude.

Dude has a dark secret pain, and is involved in some vaguely si Entertaining, but I'm not sure I'd go right to good. Dude has a dark secret pain, and is involved in some vaguely sinister activities related to death a.

The pair have an immediate and all-consuming attraction. The heroine receives vague warnings from all and sundry about the evils lurking in the house and in the heart of our hero.

However, none of our heroes actions actually indicate that they are a terrible person. Evil and cruel?

The thing is, in both, our hero also seems to require that our heroine trust him unconditionally, despite the fact that A he is aware of the rumours surrounding his activities, including rumours that he's probably a murderer or similar , B he engages in seriously shady-looking activities for the time period, often in the dead of night, and C he never actually tells her anything, even when asked directly, due to reasons of "I need to protect you and your innocence from the horrors and guilt that will forever plague my soul.

I get the not disclosing the tragic past secret, but the present-day activities could have been dispensed with in half a page.

In a ludicrously easy way. Given both characters are actually sensible. I dunno, the pacing was off.

And there was too much trying to make characters appear sinister, when it was blatantly obvious that they were not Also, the actual murderer was telegraphed ridiculously obviously.

And I read this a week ago and kinda forgot about it. Her apparent salvation arrives as the opportunity to work for the handsome, mysterious, and brooding Dr.

When several prostitutes are butchered in Whitechapel, Darcie wonders if the suspicious goings on in the household are somehow connected to the gruesome deaths.

She finds herself attracted to Dr. Cole and at the same time aware of an unidentified malevolence that seems to be closing in. Is it from without the household or from within???

Eve Silver's prose paints an eerie suspenseful tone throughout the Dark Desires story. Although very well done, the story moves forward a little slowly for my taste possibly due to an attention span shortened by my affinity for action-adventure-romance.

If you enjoy creepy-suspenseful-Gothic-mystery-romance, Dark Desires may be just the ticket. Dark Desires is not a page-turner but a good gothic romance.

The book cover attracted my attention. It reminds me of the one house on the block where the sun never shines, and out of fear curious neighbors peek from drawn curtains while remaining behind locked doors.

My first novel by Eve Silver. She is known for writing edgy, steamy, action-packed books. I cannot say that Dark Desires is action packed, but I look forward to reading more of her books if they are written in a romantic gothic styl Dark Desires is not a page-turner but a good gothic romance.

I cannot say that Dark Desires is action packed, but I look forward to reading more of her books if they are written in a romantic gothic style: a steamy romance that contains a well-executed storyline.

This book deserves a five-star rating but due to the writing style, it earned three stars. First, the pacing was a distraction.

Obviously, a slow unfolding was the author's intent. Instead, the pace caused a non-riveting experience a star reduction.

Also, I thought the repressed characters needed more terrorizing scenes or feelings of panic events another star reduction. However, what kept me intrigued was the uneasy, instinctual, feelings the heroine sensed.

Almost like a sixth sense. Next, the author wrote from the heroine's POV and by no means did I find her frivolous.

As a matter of fact, the author writes "take charge type leading ladies. Who doesn't enjoy a brooding hero? He too was a mystifying character that made me want to question his motives.

I did not feel a strong attraction between the protagonist and the Hero but more so need for companionship For me, the relationship worked because of their willingness of acceptance.

Secondary characters were one dimensional. I felt I missed information about their fate. I expect closure within a stand-alone novel.

Last, the setting was just as gray as the book cover. When the fog rolled off London's river Thames, I visualized night creatures and screams from rooftops.

A 19th century setting of a murderer lurking the East End of the Whitechapel District. Dark Desires is not my favorite; the plot needs more development that is gripping.

However, I recommend if you like Gothic novels. I grew up reading Victoria Holt novels, but I haven't really read much in the gothic romance genre since then.

On a whim, I gave this novel a shot, and I was pleasantly surprised. It reminded me why I used to love Victoria Holt novels so much.

This author's writing is strong, the gothic elements very well executed, and the brooding hero very sexy indeed.

I also liked how the author took all the elements I loved from Victoria Holt's play book, but added some heat between the heroine and hero.

It I grew up reading Victoria Holt novels, but I haven't really read much in the gothic romance genre since then.

The heroine only had one Too Stupid To Live moment at the denouement, when she runs off to Whitechapel alone.

At night. In the fog. Straight into the villain's clutches. But hey, it's a gothic novel, and that's what the heroine is supposed to do.

I am going to read all of these novels, and so should you! This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers.

To view it, click here. I really liked this book. As a first time reader of Eve Silver I must say that I was really impressed.

It kept me on my toes at all times, kept me guessing. Dr Damien Cole was such a hard to read character and that's good because that was the authors plan, he was meant to leave you going hmm.

I really liked Darice although at times I will admit I was wondering what she was thinking, for example bedding and yes I know I used the word bedding a guy you think is a murder.

Will I read more of her? Oh yes, I think she might end up being a automatic buy for me now. Feb 11, Hannah Ruth rated it it was ok Shelves: did-not-finish.

I didn't finish this, but I got close enough to not feel bad about rating and reviewing it. The premise was great, and it started out pretty good.

But the pacing is waaayy too slow, and the prose was overly-complicated. The main character, Darcie, thought herself into elaborate, annoying circles just about every two seconds and it was all I could do not to skip all of her thoughts--which is most of the book.

I like Dr. Damien Cole quite a lot but unfortunately, I couldn't pull through for him. Highly flawed but I enjoyed the book anyway.

I usually have trouble with books that aren't well written, but Ms. Silver is such a fun storyteller that this time I didn't care. If you are a stickler, you may have trouble with it, but if you just enjoy Gothic stories, you might want to give it a try.

A dark romance with a definite gothic feel to it. It was written in third person but still followed the main character and her thoughts.

The villain was fairly easy to figure out but still a pleasant read. Loved the hero loved the heroine!!!

Minor complaints: The anatgonist was weak. He is evil because he is insane, or evil for the sake of evil. The love scenes could be better - not very detailed A bit predictable Felt a bit rushed at the end.

Sep 17, Tandie rated it it was ok Shelves: creepy-dude-in-love , historical-fic , tstl. It was sort of a gothic farce. Not going to read the rest of this series.

I was so disappointed. I tried hard to like this book. It is a gothic historical romance with explicit sex scenes.

There were moments where I was intrigued, but all of those moments ended in disappointment. The hero is a Goody-Two-Shoes and the heroine is such a weak character, even though she talks about being strong all the time.

Ok, so it was nice that she and her sister reunited. Also it sounds lovely how little the good doctor cares about rules and class.

But this is not enough to weigh aga I was so disappointed. But this is not enough to weigh against the rest.

I did argue with myself that for Darcie being so timid made sense after the horrible things she went through, and later in her role as a servant.

Also maybe this is a given in a gothic novel? But she annoyed me so much: always acting in clear contradiction to everything we are told about her.

For example when she accepts her status as his mistress but withholds her trust, she never even thinks about making a deal with him to assure her future!!!

So she thinks this is temporary, and she does not want to go back into poverty: why then does she not act accordingly???

Also the contrast between her timidity and how she acted in bed was bewildering. The HEA was a let down: he suddenly can talk and love in annoyingly poetic tones, and she gets all that her little bourgeois heart ever wanted: marriage and a baby.

Even her prostitute sister ends up in a respectable marriage - how boring. They all take it in stride.

The narration may have been part of the problem. It was not bad per se, but the way Darcie was portrayed may have influenced my opinion.

Shelves: 3-star , reviewed , historical-romance , suspense , more-lust-than-love. Lo mejor ha sido el misterio.

Y en general, la historia ha estado entretenida. It must be that I wasn't in the mood for this story or that I expected something different darker, more sinister or that I had just read a mystery that was superb yes, I know, comparisons are odious And it is not a bad story, no sir, but I've been finding it lacking at every step, must be that I've become deranged and believed I was Sherlock Holmes looking for the perfect crime, or something like that The most gothic thing on this romance is that the plot takes place at night or during the day when there is always a thick fog or a torrential storm.

And the darker about it are the assumptions that Darcie makes on the rest of the characters, often unfounded, and the times they actually have sense, our protagonist just suffer a TSTL moment that just remove me from the story.

The best thing has been the mystery. The author uses London in , with Jack the Ripper in its background although she never refers to it, to locate the mystery and the murders, and so the atmosphere is oppressive and distressing, perfect for the suspense, but then the author ruin all the work done throwing her heroine to the streets of Whitechapel as if she were walking down Mayfair And the romance has not been bad but it had not convinced me.

There have been more lust than love, and one of the reasons why I have not managed to believe the "dark" side of the romance is because view spoiler [ Darcie believes Damian is the bad guy but still succumb to her lust, they have already had sex and she still doubts if he would be the killer or not I could have done with a less saccharine one The medical facet of the story and its historical location were what I liked most.

In general, the story has been entertaining. It has truly been a case of expectations not met more than a bad story. Maybe next time View all 13 comments.

This wasn't exactly what I imagined by the blurb. Overall, it was not that bad but I must say the balance didn't seem to exist which means some scenes felt very out of place if one just considers the tone and the gothic atmosphere.

Its been a while since I have enjoyed a historical romance like I did this one. It wasnt about the London ton, or ball gowns and beautiful heroines.

Its a love story yes, but with under currents of something dark and sinister. The story is about Darcie Finch, a well to do merchant's daughter, who has befallen dire straits.

With no money and no place to live, she is forced sleep in dark alleyways in London's notorious Whitechapel district.

It is the era of Jack the ripper, and tales of gruesome murders are adrift casting Darcie's circumstances in complete gloom.

Darcie finds employment as a maid in Dr. Damien Cole's household. A recluse and and avid anatomist, the servants whisper about his odd work hours and warn Darcie to keep her nose out of his secrets.

Witnessing his bloodied shirts and late night deliveries of what Darcie suspects to be dead bodies, Darcie refuses to believe, the man who showed her such kindness could be evil.

Initially Darcie views Damien in the light of a savior, who rescued her from the ill fates of the streets, but despite the warnings she finds herself inexplicably drawn him.

Suspicion lurks, and grows deeper when another innocent woman is brutally killed, her heart cut out with doctor like skill and precision.

I found both the protagonists very likable. Darcie starts out as a timid mouse, but gradually sheds her skin and emerges to be brave, fierce and intelligent.

Throughout the story Darcie sorts out her feelings and unbidden attraction to Damien. I loved how she grew bolder, not realizing that you're stronger than you actually believe.

Damien is dark, yet polite and courteous, who harbors his own demons. As I am a sucker for demon-harboring heros, so naturally I found him alluring.

One thing I didnt like was how the book was solely from Darcies point of view. I understand this was to add to the mystery of the story, but a few of thoughts from the shuttered and oft cold Damien would have been intriguing.

The book was also very well written, which added to the pleasure of reading it. Will definitely be picking about other books by Eve Silver, especially the paranormal series.

As a last resort, Darcie Finch goes to a brothel for employment. But the madam turns Darcie out, telling her to seek employment from someone who owes her a favor Strange things are happening at the Cole residence.

Servants have disappeared. Unsavory characters visit at odd hours of the night. And the handsome doctor leaves his laboratory covered in blood.

Now Damien has offered Darcie the chance to use her skills as an artist to work beside him. But the closer Darcie gets to Damien, the more she wonders if he is a charming healer This is a gothic romance loosely based on the Jack the Ripper murders.

I thought there was a little too much description and we were in the heroine's head too much, but I guess that is typical of gothics.

I would have preferred more dialogue. But the book was an easy read and did hold my interest. My rating: 3. I liked the very light medical context, but I didn't like the false creepy atmosphere and the false suspects you know from the first appearance can not be guilty.

I rolled my eyed when the dodgy men turn out to be nothing more than washer men, as in many other scenes I can not describe because it would say too much.

What about the heroine, who goes out in the middle of a storm in the city's most ill-fame area when she has been told to stay inside!

All drowned in the endless questions the heroin t I liked the very light medical context, but I didn't like the false creepy atmosphere and the false suspects you know from the first appearance can not be guilty.
